1. Who Says You Can’t Build A Longboard In Residence?!

Heya!

My name is Andrea and I am a first year university student in Halifax, NS. I happen to be taking this really fascinating sustainability course and as part of the class we are tasked with completing a constructive assignment. Essentially, we are given the entire semester to build something that is sustainable and pertains to food, shelter, or transportation. The idea is to develop tangible skills that promote self-sufficiency in one or more of these areas and then pass on those skills to others in a creative way.  Your imagination is the limit…

What is my plan for this project you might ask? Well, as you can tell by the title, I have decided to make my very own sustainable longboard and document the process through this blog. Longboarding is a fun, zero-carbon form of transportation and, in my opinion, perfectly suited for this project. If all goes well, my materials will all be salvaged, second-hand or natural alternatives. How hard can this be, right?

I thoroughly enjoy longboarding as a hobby but have never undertaken the task of making one myself. I have some carpentry skills but have never built anything like this and I also live in residence with little access to workspace or basic materials, let alone tools! Nevertheless, this is a challenge that I am keen to take on. If I can do it, anyone can!

I will be posting about each stage of the development of my board as well as noting the resources that I make use of. Expect successes and expect failures. All in all, I hope that this blog will become a valuable resource to encourage and assist anyone in the future who attempts a similar endeavor. Feel free to comment or make any suggestions that you see fit. I don’t expect to get this right the first time but I am excited to try!
